Rich Nolan

Inspector

Inspector Rich Nolan joined Stony Brook in 2012 following law enforcement roles at both SUNY Buffalo (2000) and SUNY Brockport (2005) Police Departments where he was a police officer and later a police supervisor. Throughout his career, he has sought out and participated in a wide variety of training, including several Train the Trainer programs. He served these campuses as a field training officer, bike patrol unit member, breath analysis technician, instructor and community police officer.

Rich has received specialized training in police mental health and active shooter response. He regularly instructs on several topics for in-service training to our police and security staff, including Security Guard Refresher, Police Use of Force, Firearms Instruction and Naloxone Administration. Rich is the recipient of the State University Police Chiefs Association Award for Heroism for successfully intervening in a domestic related kidnapping, and has received numerous letters of commendation and appreciation.

Rich’s formal education includes degrees from SUNY Delhi (AA), SUNY Brockport (BS) and an advanced certificate in Criminal Justice Education through the University of Virginia. Inspector Nolan is a graduate of the FBI National Academy, Session 242.

Rich is a proud veteran of the United States Army who served in Saudi Arabia and Iraq during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. In his free time Rich most enjoys boating and fishing on the waters of the Long Island Sound. Rich’s previous work in higher education includes representing veterans in the Financial Aid Office and working as an advisor in college admissions.
